The three biggest risks insurance companies face are spread of risk, pricing and claims settlementIn many cases, in automobile accidents where "no fault" coverage is available are staged accidents, and the occupants of the cars claim they are injured. Claims handling is also a great risk due to fraud and the uncertainty of the outcome of court decisions. The most difficult aspect of the insurance business is pricing the product without being able to determine what new exposures might occur during the policy term. Unlike a manufacturing business in which the cost of the materials and labor can be determined at the time of manufacture and priced accordingly, the cost of the insurance product is not determined until a future date. Since premiums are based on probability of loss, the cost of claims can change with future circumstances that could not be predicted at the time of the sale. In the area of pricing, the problem is that insurance is sold at a specific price for a claim that may occur at a given time in the future. Even companies providing life, workers' compensation and health and accident insurance would not expect so many claims from such a location. For example, with the World Trade Center, some companies were exposed to far more risk than they expected since they did not expect different business locations on different floors and in different buildings to be destroyed at one time. Spread of risk is important because a company must be concerned with having too much exposure at any given location. Court decisions are also unpredictable in dealing with soft tissue and psychological injuries, since an accurate diagnosis is not possible in most cases, and awards vary depending upon the preparation of the lawyers involved and the testimony of hired doctors. This practice is also common in Florida and New York State. They tell people they will be able to collect benefits for their fictitious injuries. Some paralegals and rehab clinics specialize in staged accidents and also work with tow truck drivers to divert people from the scene of the accident to their business locations. In Canada, the province of Ontario has one of the worst records for fraud. |
